Aloo Jeera (Potatoes with Cumin) Recipe by Manjula, Indian Vegetarian Gourmet

Today I will be making aloo jeera. Potatoes with cumin seeds. Aloo jeera is easy, yet delicious side dish. This can complement any meal. Cumin seeds has a slightly nutty flavor. In this dish cumin seeds is one of the main spice.

This recipe will serve 4. For this recipe we will need: 5 medium potato Which I have already boiled, peeled and cubed in bite size. It makes it approximately 4 cups of cubed potatoes. 2 tablespoons of oil 1.

5 teaspoons of cumin seeds (jeera) 1/8 teaspoon of asafoetida (hing) About 1 tablespoon of thinly sliced ginger (adrak) 2 green chillies, sliced lengthwise. 1.5 teaspoons of coarsely ground coriander (dhania) 1/4 teaspoon of red chilli powder 1/4 teaspoon of turmeric (haldi) 1 teaspoon of mango powder (amchoor) 1.

5 teaspoons of salt And about 2 tablespoons of chopped cilantro (hara dhania) First I will roast the spices in oil and add the potatoes. Mix it well. Cook it for 3-4 minutes and garnish with cilantro. That’s how simple this dish is.

Heat is on, medium high. First I will add the oil. And wait till oil is moderately hot. Not smoking. It’s important that when you add the cumin seeds to oil it cracks right away for the best flavor and aroma.

Add the oil. And I am going to wait till oil is moderately hot. So wait few seconds. Oil is ready. So first I will put the cumin seeds. As you see they are cracking. Asafoetida Stir for a second. Now add the ginger.

Green chilli Stir. Lower the heat. And add all the remaining spices. Amchoor (Mango powder) Coriander powder Salt Red chilli Turmeric Stir it. And add the potatoes. Mix it well. All the potatoes should be coated with spices.

And while you are mixing it has a very nice aroma of all the mixed spice. Potatoes are nicely coated with spices. Adjust the chilli and salt to your taste. I like the bites of ginger. But if you don’t prefer that, you can add the ginger juice instead of sliced ginger.

Potatoes are almost ready. It has been about 2 minutes. Another 2 minutes. I am going to add the cilantro. So potatoes are ready. I have been stirring this for last 4 minutes. As you see they are looking really good.

And it’s time to add the cilantro. Turn off the heat. And mix this well. Ready to serve. It’s easy and very delicious. Aloo jeera is looking great. A mouthwatering dish. Has a nice aroma of ginger and cumin seeds.
