In August and September 2016 I travelled solo through Bulgaria, Serbia, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro and Bosnia & Herzegovina.
I chased waterfalls, I swum in the ocean, I ate lots of food, I watched sunsets, I made new friends, I did a lot of walking, I took thousands of photos and I made a whole heap of truly fantastic memories.
Eastern Europe is a largely underrated part of the world. Many overlook the countries of this region in favour of more famous places and sights in Central, Western and Northern Europe. However having spent an utterly fantastic summer in this region I honestly cannot put into words how amazing this part of the world is. It’s rich in history, culture and traditions, it has completely breathtaking scenery, the people are some of the friendliest and most hospitable that I’ve ever met, there isn’t an intense and frustrating crush of tourists, the adventures you can go on and the places you can see are so incredibly unique and varied, and, arguably best of all, your money will go a lot further in Eastern Europe than it will elsewhere in the continent. Like I said, I simply cannot put into words how amazing Eastern Europe is, so instead I tried to summarise that amazingness into a 4 minute video to try and share just a fraction of the brilliant time I had wandering and wanderlusting over the summer.
I travelled with Qatar Airways, EU Rail, Air Serbia, Bus Croatia, Expedia AU, HostelWorld, AirBnb and Booking.com.
In chronological order, I visited;
Rila Monastery, Bulgaria
Vintgar Gorge and Lake Bled, Slovenia
Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia
Kornati Islands National Park, Croatia
Mostar, Bosnia & Herzegovina
Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina
